This location is famous for its typical ceramics that can be seen decorating the main monuments of the borough. This ancient maritime republic, which was prosperous in the XI centrury, was founded during Roman times. In 1343 a tidal wave destroyed much of the city. Furthermore, between the end of May and the beginning of June each year, a historical boat race between the maritime republics is held. Punta Campanella is the ideal route for trekking, and it is the natural road linking the gulf of Salerno to the Sorrento peninsula. This is the place where Ulysses met the mermaids. Ischia is a big island belonging to the Flegree archipelago, it has a surface area of 46 square kilometres is home to six towns. It is visible from long distances thanks to Mount Epomeo , which offers optimum shelter in poor weather conditions because it is 788 metres high. If you look at the island from above, it is trapezium shaped. There are so many things to visit and do in Ischia that we advise visitors to call a dedicated guide. Agropoli, surrounded by the green of the National park of Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni, and by the crystal-clear water of the sea, is one of the first pearls of the Southern coast of Salerno. It is rich in history thanks to its ancient historic centre and the Angevin-Aragonese castle, as well as in culinary traditions thanks to its typical pizza served in a wicker basket. The village took its name from Ferdinand of the house of Bourboun. Among its natural beauties the Cala Bianca beach stands out. This beach takes its name from the white sand mixed with pebbles that you can find on the beach. The National Park was formed fairly recently (1991) and it covers an area of 180.000 acres. In the park you can find 1.800 plant species and 25 different habitats which are home to more than 600 animal species, among which are the last specimens of the golden eagle in Italy. These two small towns of the Roman period were buried in 79 AC by more than 5 metres of ash and red-hot rocks caused by the violent eruption of Vesuvius This incident caused the instant death of the entire population of the two towns. Today they constitute one of the most evocative archaeological sites on earth, declared world heritage by UNESCO in 1997.
