Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"translation-block\">Marina d\u2019Arechi today hosted the Salerno stage of the fifth edition of M.A.R.E. (Marine Adventure for Research &amp; Education). This citizen science project is promoted by the Fondazione Centro Velico Caprera ETS in scientific collaboration with the One Ocean Foundation. Its goal is to collect data on the health of the Mediterranean and raise public awareness about marine environmental protection and biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the second time Marina d\u2019Arechi welcomes the M.A.R.E. project, confirming the value of collaboration among scientific research, institutions, maritime operators, and citizens in promoting a deeper understanding of marine ecosystems and contributing to the safeguarding of our sea.<em>. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The collected data represents a valuable tool to guide increasingly conscious and sustainable choices.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"translation-block\">\"Marinas represent the ideal places to connect knowledge, innovation, and sustainability. Since its design phase, Marina d\u2019Arechi has guided its actions toward responsibility, environmental awareness, and respect for a fundamental resource for our territory and future generations,\" stated the President of Marina d\u2019Arechi, Agostino Gallozzi.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"translation-block\">\"We are absolutely convinced,\" he added, \"that protecting the sea is not only an environmental duty but also a strategic lever for economic development, the competitiveness of coastal territories, and the growth of the entire Blue Economy. Investing in scientific knowledge, marine ecosystem monitoring, and education means creating the conditions for long-lasting development capable of generating value, jobs, and well-being for the communities that live and work by the sea.\"<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"translation-block\">\"Just as we teach the rules of navigation and safety, we should also teach those of marine protection. For this reason, I believe that knowledge of environmental best practices should find a place in training courses for obtaining boating licenses, so that every sailor also becomes a conscious guardian of our marine heritage,\" Gallozzi concluded.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"translation-block\">\"We are deeply grateful to Marina d\u2019Arechi for hosting us and for continuing to support the M.A.R.E. project. Sharing scientific results with the community is an essential part of our mission, and doing so in a place so attentive to sustainability and open to dialogue makes this journey even more meaningful. Today's enthusiasm and participation prove that protecting the Mediterranean is a shared commitment that grows when it is narrated and experienced together,\" said Enrico Bertacchi, Secretary General of the Fondazione Centro Velico Caprera ETS.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"translation-block\">Speakers at the presentation event of the project's main results included: Rear Admiral (Ret.) Maurizio Trogu, Regional Delegate of LNI Campania and Basilicata Tirrenico; Giuseppe Iovane, General Director of IZSM \u2013 Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale Mezzogiorno; Gianluigi Paduano, Veterinary Medical Director of UOS Ichthyopathology IZSM; and Mariarosaria Morelli, scientific representative of the Thalassonia Project.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The M.A.R.E. Project<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"translation-block\">Now in its fifth edition, M.A.R.E. has established itself as one of the most important research and outreach programs dedicated to the Mediterranean Sea. It operates as a traveling scientific platform open to collaboration with national and international institutions, universities, students, and researchers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four years after the first edition, 2026 marks the return to the Tyrrhenian Sea and inaugurates the new four-year cycle of activities (2026-2029). This will consolidate the monitoring of main environmental pressures on the Mediterranean, ensuring the continuity and comparability of data collected over time. In parallel, the project introduces new research topics and innovative approaches for analyzing marine ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"translation-block\">The protagonist of the mission is the catamaran Caprera, moored for the occasion at Marina d\u2019Arechi, which serves as a true floating scientific platform. During the monitoring campaigns, researchers from Italian and European universities and research centers take turns on board. They engage in data collection, the development of theses and scientific reports, and the creation of publications dedicated to studying the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project's scientific protocol is divided into four research macro-areas: environmental pollution, noise pollution, marine biodiversity monitoring, and climate change.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initiative's main objectives include scientific research on marine ecosystems, public dissemination of results to a wide and diverse audience, and collaboration with national and international institutions and authorities to define shared best practices for marine protection.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"translation-block\">The catamaran Caprera set sail on May 16 from the La Maddalena Navy base\u2014a historic patron of the project\u2014for a ten-week mission that will conclude on July 22.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Data from Campania<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"translation-block\">During the meeting hosted at Marina d\u2019Arechi, Martina P\u00e8, Marine Biologist and scientific coordinator on board the M.A.R.E. project, also presented the main results of the monitoring activities carried out along the Campania coasts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The collected data highlights a generally positive outlook. Indeed, the samples analyzed in Campania show concentrations of various metals that are aligned with or lower than the Tyrrhenian average, particularly for chromium, cadmium, mercury, manganese, iron, zinc, and lead, indicating a lower influence from widespread industrial sources.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conversely, a moderate enrichment of copper and cobalt was detected, primarily attributable to local coastal processes such as port activities, river inputs, and phenomena related to the biological productivity of the area.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regarding PCBs, the levels recorded along the Campania coasts are intermediate compared to the overall samples collected in the Tyrrhenian basin, and significantly lower than those detected in well-known Mediterranean contamination hotspots like Marseille and Barcelona.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Analyses relating to DDT confirm the absence of recent inputs.
