3rd day of the 44th Winter Championship

On Sunday, 11 January, the 3rd day of the 44th Gulf of Salerno Offshore Winter Championship took place, featuring the two scheduled races: the first race, organized by Compagnia della Vela, awarded the “Compagnia della Vela” Cup; the second race, organized by ASD Marina, awarded the “Marina” Cup and the “Marina d’Arechi” Trophy, offered by Marina d’Arechi Salerno Port Village.

The day’s race report

In line with the forecasts, the weather conditions proved to be particularly challenging. On the racecourse, the tail end of the latest weather system
weather disturbance welcomed the sailors with very low temperatures, a residual southerly swell, and an opposing fetch generated by northerly winds averaging 16–18 knots, with gusts reaching up to 25 knots over the course of the morning.
Challenging conditions that forced several boats to retire due to various technical failures, with one crew member injured and taken to hospital—fortunately discharged later the same day—three anchoring lines lost, and other issues, all of which were subsequently resolved by the Race Committee, excellently chaired by Francesco Landi of Salerno.

The two races

Fourteen boats out of the 24 entered in the championship lined up on the starting line.
At the end of the day, the final standings awarded “Stupefacente Marina d’Arechi”, owned by Antonello Stanzione with Bruno Stanzione at the helm, victory in both races sailed in the Cruising–Racing class, the most competitive and technical class, featuring the longest course at 7.06 nautical miles.

The prizes

The ASD Marina Cup was therefore awarded to “Stupefacente Marina d’Arechi”, while the Marina d’Arechi Trophy, assigned by Marina d’Arechi to the first-place boat in the Grand Cruising class, went to “Diavolo”, owned by Antonio Olivieri with Luigi Castria at the helm.
The BCC Salerno Trophy, offered by Banca Campania Centro, was awarded to “Area 51 – Grazie Fabrizio”, owned by Andrea Marotta, who also served as helmsman, and placed first in the Mini Offshore class.
